An interlocking rubaiyat version of an earlier poem, for the Scavenger Hunt.
Watching the child wake
She bends her head beneath the moon’s pale glow,
And listens to the gentle breathing, slow,
The heartbeat of her cradled child asleep,
As peaceful as the shaded river-flow.
As peaceful as the river running deep,
Beyond the window where the dawn will leap,
And all the shadows gathered by the night,
Will turn to coloured cloths when rainbows weep.
The mother watching by warm candlelight,
Waits for the day to grow, the sky ignite,
Repeats her mother’s words from long ago,
Wake, child, and watch your dreams grow wings in flight.
Jane you made this one absolutely sing!! I think this must be the form that echoes in your heart!!! Bravo! ❤

There are plenty of things I can’t do, but I can hear rhythm and rhyme. I wish I could sing. Failing that, I’ll be happy to ‘sing’ words xxx

Beautiful theme and imagery, Jane! I love that you end the first stanza with “As peaceful as the shaded river-flow” and begin the next with “As peaceful as the river running deep.” The repetition with variation really works for me. It enhances the lullaby effect and also gives a sense of the flow of the river.

Thank you for picking up on that. I like repetition too, for exactly that reason xx
